Ghassan Kanafani: Writing as Resistance
Contents
Ghassan Kanafani remains one of the most powerful revolutionary voices to emerge from the Palestinian struggle. A writer, journalist, and political organiser, his work cannot be separated from the material realities of dispossession, exile, and resistance that shaped his life. Born in Acre in 1936 and forced into exile during the 1948 Nakba, Kanafani’s writings carry the weight of lived history, reflecting not only loss, but a persistent and organised refusal to accept it.

As a leading member and spokesperson of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Kanafani played a crucial role in shaping the ideological direction of the movement. His contribution went beyond articulation; he helped ground the Palestinian struggle within a broader anti-imperialist and class-based framework. In 1969, he drafted the PFLP programme that formally adopted a Marxist-Leninist line, marking a decisive shift in the movement’s political orientation. This shift located the Palestinian struggle not as an isolated national question, but as part of a larger global struggle against imperialism, capitalism, and colonial domination.

Through his role as editor of al-Hadaf, the PFLP’s publication, Kanafani consistently bridged political theory with cultural expression. His essays, novels, and critical writings did not merely document suffering; they exposed its structural roots while emphasising the necessity of organised resistance. His literary work, deeply intertwined with his political commitments, became a means of both education and mobilisation.

Kanafani’s legacy lies in this synthesis of thought and action. His writings continue to serve as a political tool, pushing readers to move beyond passive empathy toward a deeper understanding of struggle, organisation, and revolutionary transformation.
